Exquisite Examples of Non-Flash Websites

by Heather Floyd November 18, 2008 14:29

In support of an article I wrote for my e-zine today, “The Problem with Flash” I have compiled a few sites that show excellent graphical design without being constructed entirely in Flash.

Examples of What Can Be Done Without Flash:

Shows what can be done graphically with a traditionally conservative business industry.

Click the links. You probably won’t believe this is done without Flash, but it is. Those effects are created using JavaScript and JQuery.

A classic of amazing CSS design. (Click through all the designs in the right-hand menu.)

Another portfolio that proves Flash isn’t necessary for sexy effects.

Shows the limitless design options of HTML.

An Example of a Hybrid Site

Lest you think I detest Flash in all its incarnations, a sensible example of using Flash elements in an otherwise standard website.

Only the top graphic of the logo and lizard is Flash on this site.

Flash can play a part in enhancing the user experience but if it fights the search engine spiders it is ultimately harming the business - needs considered use.

drainage problems

I am engaged in css design and web page / page control layout at the moment and got pulled in by your posting, " Exquisite Examples of NonFlash Websites " , in Yahoo. The challenge of using css styles to arrive at a good visual design in all the leading web browsers, IE, Safari, Firefox and Chrome is a big headache which takes me umpteen hours to solve.  Interesting to study your views and the comments in your site on the subject.  I find the tutorial sites are rigid and mention the same points, dialog in blogs oftentimes addresses genuine methods to resolve problems or the most effective ways to attack contemporary design.  Thanks for the article.

I agree that decent cross-browser design is always a challenge, but the SEO benefits alone are worth the effort, in my view.

Flash Design Girl

Well, the one "You probably won’t believe this is done without Flash" doesnt work, check the link. Ah and i was so exited to see it "wont believe" Smile
Truly, can not say it's the best web sites i've ever seen. And there is nothing bad in flash at all. If you use it smartly. I'm not big fan of fully flash made sites (because of SEO difficulties) too, but there is nothing bad to integrate some stylish flash elements in web site. IMHO

Contemporary Furniture

I think the introduction of page load time into the Google algorithms for 2010 could be the end of flash. It needs to seriously sped up otherwise it can damage user experience rather than add to it.

Who Is Arachne's Sister?

I consider myself a spiritual sister to Arachne, of ancient greek origin, who was a priestess of the Goddess Athene and  an exceptional weaver. Though I have an interest in the fabric arts, these days most of my weaving happens online - in the form of website development and online marketing, and in building connections and relationships.

My real name is Heather Floyd and for over a decade I have been involved in web and software design and development. Now I help solopreneurs/independent professionals and micro-businesses who are overwhelmed with website options and costs to have a website that gets traffic and generates business with less aggravation and expense.

I also have interests in environmentalism & sustainability issues, personal development, and productivty.
